Fast Break: Moving Red River Street – presented by Jim Shackelford, Director

Jim is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture with over 41 years of professional experience. From 1980 to 2004 Jim was engaged in private practice in Austin as either a Project Architect, Construction Administrator, Project Manager or Principal, personally responsible for over $2 billion in construction; including commercial, industrial, semi-conductor manufacturing, and public institutional work.  In addition to traditional design-bid-build, Jim has overseen alternative delivery projects including Construction Manager at Risk, Design-Build, and fast-track multiple prime delivery methods.

Jim was with the University of Texas System – Office of Facilities and Planning (OFPC) for over 13 years, from 2004 - 2017.  In 2017, Jim was appointed as the Director of the Capital Planning and Construction office at the University of Texas at Austin, overseeing a portfolio of 13 active projects totaling over $800M. He continues in that role today.

During Jim’s tenure with the University of Texas, he has supervised the design and construction of over 7.5 million Gross Square Feet of new and renovated space, with a total value in excess of $3.5 billion.  Notable UT Austin projects Jim has managed include the Dell Medical School Phase 1, Norman Hackerman Building, Nano Science & Technology Building, Biomedical Engineering Building, Microelectronics and Engineering Research Building, Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium Expansion, Applied Research Laboratories Clark S. Penrod Wing, Welch Hall Renovation, and the Engineering Education and Research Center.  Current projects include the Gary L. Thomas Energy Engineering Building, Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium South End Zone Addition, Seay Building Addition, and Red River Street Realignment.  Past projects include the Samsung Fab 1 Expansion, Motorola BAT 1, Micron Technologies Test Facility, 3M Austin Center, and the Texas State University Science Building.

Jim has been married to his wife Debbie for over 40 years, and they have three adult children and three grandchildren.

DKR-South End Zone Case Study – presented by Michael Uyeda, Associate Director

Michael is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, School of Architecture and the Associate Director for the Offices of Capital Planning and Constructions. He has over 30 years’ experience as an architect and project manager in the private and public sector working on various projects from University research facilities to semiconductor manufacturing facilities. He also served as a Senior Project Manager with UT System Office of Facilities Planning and Construction.
