2012 Engineer’s Day at the Children’s Museum

E-Week is on the way and so is the annual Engineer’s Day at the Austin Children’s Museum organized by the Austin Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Help kids build a hoop glider and see how far it goes…watch how high they can build a newspaper tower that supports a golf ball…lend a hand to help them build all kinds of structures with spaghetti and marshmallows – you’ll be surprised at their creativity!

On Saturday, February 18th, the Austin Branch of ASCE and the Greater Austin Contractors and Engineers Association (ACEA) will host the 11th Annual Engineer’s Day at the Austin Children’s Museum!

The Austin Branch of ASCE is seeking volunteers to commit to one of two shifts. Pass the word to anyone else who may be interested! Volunteers can choose a morning shift from 9:00 to noon, or an afternoon shift from 11:30 to 2:30. We anticipate up to 300 children will attend throughout the day. Training will be minimal and take place just before your shift. Volunteers will receive a certificate for PDH credit.

We’ve had over 200 children attend each day over the last eight years! The Austin Children’s Museum charges admission on the day of the event, and we make an effort to obtain sponsorship money to pay for as many admissions as possible in order to encourage attendance at the event. ACEA and the Austin Branch of ASCE help fund the admissions, however we are also looking for general event sponsors at the $150 or $250 level, and activity table sponsors at the $500 level to fund supplies for the activities and give-aways for the kids. In exchange for your sponsorship, your company name will be included on all press kits/media announcements, printed promotional materials handed out to the children and museum guests, and on a display board at the museum on the day of the event. Table sponsors will also have their company name on a sign at an activity table. If you wish, you may also provide small give-away items with your company name/logo to be placed in the take-home goody bags the kids receive.

Girlstart – Winter Wonderland

Government Employee Grant Program

The Austin Branch encourages local Civil Engineers starting out in their careers who are employed by government agencies to be active members of ASCE. The grant program will award up to two recipients reimbursement for a full year’s National and Local ASCE dues. Applicants must be: (1) a full-time employee of a government agency and (2) not be eligible for ASCE membership dues reimbursement from that agency. Applications are due on January 23rd, 2012 and can be downloaded directly from the ASCE Austin Branch website. 2012 Bowl for Kids Sake

For the 7th year, the Austin Branch will be participating in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas’ annual Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser, with our bowling event scheduled for Saturday, March 3rd at 8:30 PM at Highland Lanes. The theme this year is “Las Vegas” so come dressed in your sparkly Vegas inspired attire.

Over the last 6 years, Austin ASCE has raised over $100,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters through this event! Last year the Austin Branch had 20 teams, and over 100 participants. Participants are asked to solicit donations from their friends, family and co-workers through a simple web based system with each bowler committing to raise at least $125, which is extremely easy.

We are looking for people who are willing to be Team Captains who would recruit co-workers or friends to form a team of 4 to 6 people. If you’d like to participate but don’t have a team, we can put teams together for you or you can just donate to one of our ASCE teams or bowlers as well. Absolutely no bowling skill is required for this event, it’s just for fun! EWRI Workshop – October 14th, 2011

6th Annual EWRI Workshop on October 14 – Sustainable Stormwater Management and Adverse Impact Mitigation. Please plan to attend this one day workshop on the current state of sustainable stormwater management and adverse impact mitigation in Central Texas. The workshop is organized by the Austin EWRI Workshop committee and supported by the Austin Branch of ASCE. Get 8 PDHs, including an ethics hour at lunch!

Urbanization and traditional development methods impact downstream receiving waters, adversely impacting potential flood hazards, water quality, and streambank stability, and creating an unsustainable stormwater ecosystem. Further, these impacts may only be partially recognized in state and local codes, and current design practice may not necessarily address mitigation of all impacts. This workshop will address these adverse impacts due to development and present sustainable and low impact stormwater management design methods for mitigating impacts onsite and offsite.

EWB Austin Fundraiser

Join Engineers Without Borders at their benefit show on Friday, September 9th, 2011 at Austin’s Pizza (2324 Guadalupe Street) for live music and more. Come learn about EWB’s projects, talk with current members about getting involved, and network with professionals and UT students. Mention you are there with EWB and 15% of the proceeds will go to EWB supporting their projects in Panama and Peru. See EWB’s website for more information.

ASCE Fall 2011 PE Review Course

ASCE Raises $18k for BBBS

For the 6th year Austin ASCE participated in Bowl for Kids Sake, a fundraising event for Big Brothers Big Sisters. In 2011, we raised over $18,000, giving us an amazing total of over $109,000 raised by our members since 2006!! There were 21 ASCE bowling teams from various companies and organizations, and over 100 participants who participated in this year’s Prom themed event. Top fundraising teams included K Friese & Associates ($2,555) and URS ($2,455). For more information on this great event, call Dale Murphy, PE at 512-338-1704.

2011 Engineer’s Day at the Austin Children’s Museum

On February 19th, ASCE and ACEA hosted the 10th anniversary of Engineer’s Day at the Austin Children’s Museum! The event is held annually in conjunction with E-Week to promote awareness of the engineering industry among our youth. Kids of all ages were able to experience engineering through various hands-on activities. Admission costs of about 300 children were paid for by the generosity of ASCE, ACEA, and our sponsors. An additional 100 admissions were donated to the Austin Children’s Museum. The Austin Children’s Museum expressed true appreciation for their partnership with ASCE. There is a lot of planning associated with this event and could not have been possible without the involvement of Sharon Hamilton. She, along with Linda Barlow and others, have been instrumental in the evolution of the event over the last decade.
